U16 National Cup Quarter Final Greenwood 1 Carrick Rovers 0

Greenwood 1 Carrick Rovers 0

This quarter final tie took place before a very large attendance in Togher, where they were treated to a typical cup tie. Both teams were evenly matched for the first 15 minutes but then Greenwood got a stranglehold on the game and the chances to score began to appear.

Firstly a cross from Noel Cotter on the right found Conor Sexton in the far side at the edge of the six yard box and from his effort goalkeeper Brendan McNally made a great save. Then five minutes later Republic of Ireland international John Egan had an effort which struck the bar and went over. The Carrick defense were under tremendous pressure at this stage ably led by Steve McMahon at centre back.

With 30 minutes gone Greenwood were awarded a free kick on Kyle Lynch near the touch line He took the kick himself and floated in a beautiful shot for John Egan to outjump the Carrick defense and power the ball into the roof of the net. From the centre off Carrick attacked the Greenwood defense and Keith McEnaney fired in a terrific shot from 25 yards which Damian Cahalane brought off a great save but could not hold the ball and Ronan Lonergan rounded him on the ground and looked liked scoring only for David Philpott to clear off the line. Carrick were now exerting pressure on the Greenwood defense but man of the match performance from left full back Ian Lordan kept them at bay.

The second period started with Greenwood again attacking the Carrick defense but were unable to add to their tally. The game finished with Carrick thrown everything at the Greenwood defense who held firm to the final whistle. There were good performances here from Stephen O'Donoghue and Niall Harte of Greenwood and from Ben Woods of Carrick Rovers.

The Togher boys now advance to a semi final tie against Corinthian Boys or Arklow Town.
