Up against top-tier outfit Greenwood, Mayfield gave their all and almost snatched a place in the next round of the local cup.
Mayfield currently top the first division, winning six games from eight and Greenwood were made to work for their victory on the day with Conor Sexton scoring the all-important winner in the second period of extra-time.
Greenwood started the stronger but Darragh Foley broke the deadlock for the hosts on the quarter of the hour mark.
Goalkeeper William O' Driscoll managed to get a hand to the midfielder's 25-yard thunderbolt but the power of the effort wastoo much and the ball nestled into the roof of the net.
The rest of the half was quite eventless with Mayfield's back four of Liam Horgan, Ian McCarthy, Des Mallon and James Buckley rebuffing the majority of Greenwood's attacks through the centre.
Indeed, Greenwood's only genuine chance fell to John Egan but the midfielder's 12 yard header struck the post.
The visitors had Mayfield on the back-foot again after the interval and a number of individuals excelled including Greenwood's Ian Lordan and Mayfield's Liam Horgan.
The equaliser came on 55 minutes when Republic of Ireland U16 International John Egan calmly slotted home after an expensive defensive error in the Mayfield box.
Egan began to play more of an important role in the game and the playmaker set-up substitute Pat Coakley with five minutes remaining on the edge of the area.
Coakley picked his spot and shot to the corner with power.
It seemed as if Mayfield were a beaten team but with virtually their next attack Shane McGill pounced in the box to make the score at the end of normal time 2-2.
Just as the sides were heading for a penalty shoot-out, the tireless Sexton popped up to score the winner in style, crashing a powerful drive against the upright and in.

Subs: James McDonald, Adrian Murphy, Ryan Pumprey, Pat Coakley, Aaron Kidney.
