Greenwood 5 College Corinthians B 1

Murphy Youth Cup 1st March

Greenwood cruised to a 5-1 win over College Corinthians in the second round of the Murphy Youth Cup at Castletreasure last Saturday. Corinthians were no match for a Greenwood side that dominated throughout.

Both Daniel Sweeney and Mick Cronin were in total control around the middle and up front Jason Sexton got two goals of real quality.

In defence, Greenwood were rarely troubled apart from the Corinthians goal when a lapse in concentration allowed Rob Scannell in to score his side’s only goal.

With a strong wind to their backs, Corinthians were first to threaten when Sean Grant headed narrowly wide.

At the other end, Jason Sexton set Colm Mullane up before the Greenwood winger forced a Kieran Woods save from a narrow angle.

Greenwood started to get their passing together and were in front when Mick Cronin controlled well before picking his spot from outside the box on 23 minutes.

More pressure followed from Greenwood and after Daniel Sweeney lifted a magnificent through ball for Jason Sexton, Corinthians had a narrow escape when Sexton’s past the advancing Woods came back off the upright.

Minutes later Corinthians nearly got an equaliser when Rob Scannell’s hooked effort was cleared off the line, but at the other end Kieran Woods brought off a superb save from Kevin McCarthy shortly before the break.

Greenwood doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half when Mick Cronin latched onto a loose ball before thundering his effort into the back of the net from 25 yards out.

Corinthians never gave up though and left Greenwood know that they were still in a game when good work from Mark Menton resulted in Kevin Hennessey forcing Shane Harrington to save in the 70th minute.

But Greenwood turned the screw once again and after showing neat control, Jason Sexton turned before drilling home with aplomb from 25 yards in the 71st minute.

Sexton was on target again 10 minutes later when he powered a header home from Mick Cronin’s cross.

With the Greenwood defence all at sea, Corinthians pulled one back when Rob Scannell found himself un-marked before striking past Shane Harrington in the 83rd minute.

But Greenwood were not finished and got a fifth when Jason Sexton set Daniel Sweeney up and the midfielder rattled the net with an excellent strike from 25 yards.

It was a fine team display by Greenwood with superb individual performances. Michael Cronin, Daniel Sweeney, Jason Sexton and Denis O’ Brien excelled for the winners.

Greenwood: Shane Harrington, Mark Twomey, James O’ Sullivan, Aidan Hickey, Denis O’ Brien, Kevin McCarthy, Colm Mullane, Daniel Sweeney, Michael Cronin, Jason Sexton, Robbie Chute.

Subs: Rory Madden for Robbie Chute(60) & Wayne O’ Callaghan for Colm Mullane (69)

U13 Greenwood 2 Tramore 0

Greenwood v Tramore

Local Cup Sunday 17th February 2008

at Coffeys Field, Togher

Missing their goalkeeper Darragh Comyns and right back Thomas Crowe this was always going to be a difficult assignment for Greenwood. But Ian Maguire just back from injury stepped into the breach to mind the Greenwood net.

The game took a little to settle down but when it did Darren O Regan and Christopher Olden were very industrious attacking up the wings. Keith Mc Carthy and Eoin Comyns always looked dangerous and Kelvin Mc Keown was spreading the ball well at midfield.

Greenwood were unlucky not to have scored 5 goals with Jamie Field taking points instead of goals and Ross Mc Sweeney shooting narrowly wide. Keith Mc Carthy was also unlucky when with the goal at his mercy he shot inches wide with a strike that would have broken the net!

A ball in from Keith Mc Carthy finally drew dividends with Ross Mc Sweeney connecting to give Greenwood a one goal lead at half time.

Greenwood were under some early pressure just after half time with Tramore chasing the game. The game opened up and a corner from Tramore was immediately turned into a Greenwood attack with Mark Twomey beating the keeper at the other end and his shot being saved by some good defending. But it was end to end stuff with Twomey at the other end making a decisive tackle to put the ball safely out.

Jason Dunphy came on and his pace gave Greenwood another dimension. More pressure and better balanced with Keith Mc Carthy back on the wing and Ross Mc Sweeney holding midfield, Greenwood looked like they were always going to score. Again it was Ross Mc Sweeney who clenched the winner scoring from a flick on from Wayne Forde. Bernard O Regan was very solid throughout making some vital tackles.

Leading by two goals Adam Lyne was also impressive with some incisive runs up the wing. Dean Mullins was also unlucky hitting the post when it would have been easier to score. In the dying minutes Dunphy was also unlucky hitting the crossbar. Man of the match had to be Ross Mc Sweeney who not only scored the two goals but was always a threat.
