Munster Youth Cup - Greenwood 1 Kilmallock 0

Greenwood advanced to a quarter-final tie with Clonmel Town in the Munster Youths Cup with a tight win over Kilmallock at Clashduv Park.

James O'Sullivan grabbed the crucial goal as Greenwood had to battle hard to overcome an energetic Kilmallock side 1-0 in the fourth round of the

Munster Youth Cup at Clashduv Road last Saturday.

As predicted, this tie certainly lived up to expectations. It was a hard and competitive affair between two sides that were well up for the occasion.

Kilmallock will be extremely disappointed for a number of reasons. Both Ruairi O'Shaughnessy and Graeme Mulcahy missed two gilt-edged chances in the first half and when goalkeeper Bobbie Egan dropped a clanger by failing to hold a routine cross from Michael Cronin, O'Sullivan was on hand to pick his spot for the winner in the 73rd minute.

Inter league player Daniel Sweeney was outstanding for Greenwood. He defended when he had to – he won the tackles in midfield before setting up his colleagues with some decent passes and when the opportunity arose, he helped out in attack.

Kilmallock had some quality players also on show. Mulcahy showed plenty of class in the middle along with Peter Ryan. Up front, O'Shaughnessy was very dangerous and posed a huge threat each time he had possession of the ball. Greenwood lacked such a figure in this area and as a result, a lot of their midfielder's hard work went to waste due to the level of impotency in their attack.

Nevertheless, it is goals that win games and after Greenwood achieved what was asked of them - they now find themselves in the quarter-final of this competition.

Both sides looked a little uptight and nervous starting out with a lot of passes going astray and this was evident when Kevin McCarthy fired well over from outside the box after the ball broke kindly for him in the opening minutes.

Greenwood were having the edge over the first 20 minutes or so but their obvious lack of firepower up front showed again when McCarthy did good work on the left before firing an inviting delivery in towards the near post, but no-one showed up to anticipate the cross as Killmallock's goalkeeper picked with ease.

The miss of the game came about when a mix up in the Greenwood defence allowed Mulcahy in on an open goal. But to everyone's amazement, the Kilmallock midfielder struck his effort wide of the unprotected target from 15 yards out to waste an unbelievable opportunity. Greenwood composed themselves fairly promptly but when McCarthy swung a marvellous cross into the danger area, no one came to support in attack and the Kilmallock defence cleared the threat comfortably.

Greenwood forced a corner on the left and after Dan Sweeney's thumping header was blocked by Connor Moloney; Denis O'Brien delayed with the re-bound while in a good position and the chance went.

Kilmallock were showing rapid signs of coming more into the game and should have gone in front but O'Shaughnessy missed a tremendous opportunity when he looked on in disbelief as his effort drifted agonisingly wide of the upright with the advancing Shane Harrington beaten.

Greenwood started brightly in the second half but had a let-off when Benni Burke's thumping strike came back off the upright before going away to safety. Apart from this effort, the rest of the game immersed itself into a hard, combative battle with a lot of hustle and bustle but without any clear-cut chance being created by either side.

In the end, Greenwood ran out as victors and can now look forward to a quarter-final clash with Clonmel Town next Saturday at the same venue.

GREENWOOD: Shane Harrington, Mark Twomey, James O'Sulllvan, Aidan Hickey, Denis O'Brien, Michael Cronin, Niall Calnan, Daniel Sweeney, Aidan Long, Kevin McCarthy, Wayne O'Callaghan.
