U13 National Cup - Greenwood 5 Youghal United 2

Greenwood's Keith McCarthy stole the show in this Schoolboy's U13 National Cup fixture at the Coffey's Field Sunday morning.

The home side didn't waste any time on taking the game to Youghal and in the blink of an eye found themselves a goal to the good. An in-swinging corner from the left hand side was beautifully met at the near post by Thomas Crowe who flicked the ball over Youghal keeper Brian Swayne's head from the edge of the six-yard box.

It was a sign of things to come from Crowe, who played with great heart and with a lot of creativity throughout. The home side passed the ball extremely well all over the park and extended their lead on seven minutes when Crowe went down the line and swung in a cross which was met by the head of midfielder Kelvin McKeown, knocking the ball into the path of Dean Mullins, who hit a peach of a volley to the roof of the net from outside the box.

Jolted into life, Youghal began to play some football of their own and were rewarded for their efforts moments later as striker Jerome Glavin set up Yeves Seoighe, who drilled the ball across keeper Darragh Comyrs into the bottom corner of the net.

From here on however it became the Keith McCarthy show as he combined well with Dean Mullins before slotting the ball home for his first and Greenwood's third.

Greenwood found themselves further ahead just before the break as a mix-up in the Youghal defence allowed McCarthy to pounce and smash the ball home from close range.

The opening minutes of the second-half saw McCarthy complete his hat-trick as he picked up the ball just inside Youghal half and dribbled his way to the edge of the box before coolly slotting past Swayne.

Despite being four goals in arrears Youghal kept plugging away and had some positive performances from Yeves Seoighe and Conor Coyne.

David Twomey nearly reduced the deficit only to see his blistering free-kick rebound off the crossbar.

The visitors eventually did get a consolation goal through substitute Aidan Scanlon after Kieran O' Brien played a neat pass into his path to complete the scoring.

However this game was all about McCarthy and his team-mates, who now find themselves in the next round of this prestigious competition after a highly entertaining Cup game.

Greenwood: Darragh Comyrs, Chris Olden, Thomas Crowe, Ian Maguire, Mark Twomey(captain), Kelvin McKeown, Dean Mullins, Ross McSweeney, Craig Roche, Darren O' Regan, Keith McCarthy.
Subs: Jason Dunphy for Dean Mullins(30 mins), Eoin Comyrs for Ian Maguire(42 mins)

Munster Youth Cup - Carrigaline 1 Greenwood 1 (Greenwood win 11-10 on pens)

Sep 29, 2007 Munster Youth Cup - Carrigaline 1 Greenwood 1 (Greenwood win 11-10 on pens) magnify

GREENWOOD progressed to the third round of the Lucozade Munster Youth Cup, but needed a dramatic 11-10 victory to finally see off the challenge of a spirited Carrigaline side at Ballea Park last Saturday.

This game embraced the old cliche that football is the proverbial game of two halves, as Carrigaline dominated the first and Greenwood the second.

The first 15 minutes boasted plenty of energy and commitment but little of significance until Ryan Martin's cushioned header let in Daniel Bagnall before the Carrigaline striker forced Shane Harrington to palm away in the 18th minute.

But despite Carrigaline's bright opening, the best chance fell for Greenwood's Rory Madden when he fired a good opportunity wide of the target after Stephen Hurley's punched clearance fell kindly for him outside the box Carrigaline were gradually building a platform for the lead that occurred on the half-hour.

Kyle Kinsella's lofted pass was well controlled by Paddy Kelleher and after steadying himself well with a touch, he picked his spot before rifling an effort that flashed into the net from 25 yards out to put his side 1-0 in front.

This goal ignited Greenwood and soon afterwards, Hurley had to be alert when he advanced off his line in time enough to deny Phillip Rowe a goal-scoring opportunity.

But after more Carrigaline pressure, Darren Kelly needed a fine tackle to thwart Greenwood's Aidan Hickey near goal shortly before the break.

As the second half wore on, Green- wood were looking the stronger side and after Daniel Sweeney's looping header from a Mick Cronin cross was comfortably saved by Hurley, James O'Sullivan saw his firm effort flash wide of the target from 25 yards out.

Then, Matthew Quilter drilled a good chance narrowly wide much to the relief of the Carrigaline net-minder The visitors were now in ascendancy and after Aidan Hickey's thumping effort came back off the butt of the upright , the inevitable happened in the 80th minute when Daniel sweeney seized onto a loose ball before drilling home from 30 yards to even the game with ten minutes to go.

The wind was now in the sails of the visitors and Stephen Hurley was called upon to produce a firm save from Quilter's stinging effort from an acute angle.

Then, with just seconds remaining, Greenwood's O'Sullivan was presented With a glorious opportunity to make a name for himself but misfired from just yards out to waste a great chance.

Extra time beckoned and after such a monumental effort from both sides in an absorbing contest, Greenwood booked their passage through to the next round with an 11-10 penalty shoot-out victory in the end.

Greenwood: Shane Harrington, Kevin McCarhty, Jame O’ Sullivan, Clm Mullane, Denis O’ Brien, Mick Cronin, Philip Rowe, Aidan Hickey, Daniel Sweeny, Matthew Quilter, Rory Madden.

Subs: Mark Twomey for Philip Rowe (65th minute)

Corinthian Boys 2

In a high tempo, evenly fought match at Togher Community Field on Sunday morning, Corinthians got up and running with a 2-1 away win over Greenwood.

Greenwood started better with joey Fitzpatrick their best outlet; his trickery caused Corinthians lots of problems, before he was forced off through injury before half-time.

In midfield Shane O'Donovan and Ian Wicherly were impressive, finding Fitzpatrick with enterprising passes. At the back John Egan and Cormac Collins kept things tight in defence and full-backs Shane Tobin and Robbie Browner drove forward with menace.

Wicherly went close for the hosts and midfielder Eoin Walsh tested keeper Pat Whiley from a free-kick.

The opener was down to a reckless challenge by new Greenwood recruit Ian Grainger who felled Kevin O'Regan in the area after the striker had gone close to scoring.

O'Regan stepped to the spot and planted a perfect penalty.

Corinthians didn't deserve the 1-0 lead but after the goal they were a match for Greenwood. Defenders John Forrest and Gavin Irwin got everything away from the danger area and, in midfield, Colin Stanton used the ball effectively.

Corinthians were unlucky when the ball struck Walsh's arm in the penalty area. Browner made it look easy levelling the game at 1-1.

Winger Ian Grainger thought he scored on his debut, getting around at the back post to net in style. But the goal was ruled to be offside.

In the second-half Grainger was the most dangerous player on the pitch, his runs and slick control looked the route to a Greenwood win. Stanton brought another top save from keeper Whiley placing the ball at the corner from far out.

The goalie played brilliant for the whole 70 minutes. Then defender Forrest forced another save after getting his head to a corner-kick.

Lively substitute Eoin Mccreevy went close for the hosts as did Egan and top forward David O' Brien. Then disaster for Greenwood. Penalty. The third of the day, a Wicherly handball.

Defnder Andrew Neville took Corinthians second penalty of the day slamming it into the net. After that Greenwood and Grainger tried in vain to equalise but it just wasn’t their day.

Greenwood: Pat Whiley, Shane Tobin, Robbie Browner, John Egan, Cormac Collins, Ian Wicherley, Shane O’ Donovan, Stephen Vernon, David O’ Brien, Ian Grianger, Joey Fitzpatrick.

Subs: Aidan MCarthy, David Philpott, Stephen O’ Donoghue, Eoin McGreevey, Dan Regan.

Riverstown A 2

A FINE performance by GreenwoodA U12s

handed them victory after they overcame a spirited and talented Riverstown A team 6-2 on Sunday in Togher.

It started so well for the boys m yellow and black. Some good approach play early on proved dividends for the away team with Daniel Hoare showing all the Instincts of a top goal getter by smashing his effort into the back of the net. The perfect start.

Striker James O'Leary nearly made it two soon after but he scooped his shot just over.

But Greenwood, led from the back by inspirational defender Rory O'Connor were up for the fight. Hot shot forward Aran Barry sped forward to collect the ball, strode forward and then, with clinical poise, smashed m the equalizer .1 1, game on.

A striker bristling with talent, he was aided and abetted by skilful Gary Sweeney, tricky wing man Sean Keaton and ace attacking midfielder Danny

O'Regan.

O'Regan went close to scoring but then did even better by netting a peach of goal. Hugging the left touchline, he strode forward and then unleashed a magnificent strike into the roof of the net.

Then striker Aran Barry scored a carbon copy of his O'Leary first goal, racing on to the through ball and smashing in an exquisite shot into the bottom corner. 3-1 and Greenwood , with midfielders Diarmuid Lane and Edward White playing well, were cruising. Lane made it 4-1, sliding on to the ball to send it flying into the net.

Riverstown , though, kept fighting for every ball.

Ryan Ahern, Gavin O’ Donovan and James O’ Leary all showed nice touches: three flair players that will help this team d well this season. O’ Leary’s goal was top notch, his awareness decisive in making it 4-2.

Just two goals in it now; Riverstown could sense an amazing fihtback. Substitute Edward Byrne came on to add some impetus; a clever player with much to offer.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Stephen Buckley came off the bench to grab the fifth in style before O’ Rgan won and converted a penalty. A Great start to the season for Greenwood; for Riverstown there are lot of positives for them to take from this match.

Greenwood A: Conor Hogan, Dylan Hegarty, Rory O’ Connor, Cronin O’ Leary, Diarmuid Lane, Sean Keaton, Edward White, Aran Barry, Gary Sweeney, Danny O’ Regan.

Greenwood 1 Carrigtwohill 0

Both sides went into this Murphy's Stout Division 1B encounter with unbeaten records.

Greenwood kep their record inatct, thanks to sub Clm Foley's secomd half strike.

Greenwood, with Martin Sweeney again at the helm, has brought former Tramore Athletic player Ger Foley in as assistant manager, with Leonard Crowe also helping out in the background on match days.

This was a very close fought encounter throughout with Sean Madden strong at the heart of the visitors' defence and Coleman McCarthy at the centre of most of Greenwood's midfield play.

It always looked as if it could be heading for a scoreless draw until Greenwood made the breakthrough in the 69th minute. Mark Hennessy's long throw-ins caused the visitors problems and when another delivery broke to Foley, who was on the pitch for just four minutes, he made the most of the opportunity to clinch victory, despite appeals from the Carrig goal- keeper for a foul.

The county side pushed on in search of an equalizer and this left space at the back and with five minutes remaining Hennessey had an effort taken off the line by the Carrig defence. So Greenwood took the points in what was both side's last night match until next Spring. It will be interesting to see which side will be challenging in the top half of the table when they meet again in the return fixture in Carrigtwohill later in the season.
