U12 Season so Far & St Marys Match Report

U12 Season So Far
The season got off to a slow start for the under 12 team losing their first two league matches at home to Midleton and away to Rockmount both 2-1 scorelines.Dean Sexton and Philip McSweeney scored both Greenwood goals. But the managers Mick Cotter and Paul Sherlock felt they were unluckey not to get something out of both games and they wouldn't have to wait too long to get a win.

That duly came in their next match away to St Mary's in the national cup when they came from behind to record a 3-1 win with goals from Mark Twomey,Conor Cahalane and Steven Sherlock and great performances from defenders Barry O'Sullivan-Geany, Chuilian O'Neill and center forward Philip Mc'Sweeney. They drew Killinardrish/Coachford away in the next round and had a good win 2-1 with left back Dean Sexton getting his second goal of the season from a corner kick and Steven Sherlock's second headed goal of the season after a great cross from Dean. The next game was back to the league campaign.

U12 Greenwood 3 St Marys 1
A hard fought 3-1 home win was earned against St Mary's in a game of two halves where Greenwood held a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time with two goals from the prolific Steven Sherlock the first a thumping 20 yard free kick that gave the keeper no chance, the second a good finish when he made space for himself with his first touch and placed the ball just inside the left post after a good pass from Daire O'Sullivan. St Mary's came out in the second half with all guns blazing and had Greenwood pinned back in their own half for long periods but resolute defending by center half Steven O'Connell and the rest of the back four ably assisted by wingers Ronan Cotter and Craig Coughlan and a suberb display in midfield from new signing Darragh Kenneally. When St Mary's got one back with 15 min to go and Greenwood still defending hard Jamie Minihan made a fantastic save from a free kick to deny them an equaliser and shortly after Daire O'Sullivan coolly finished after being put through by Steven Sherlock to seal the win.
